Alexandra
Frogley caught the swimming bug at a young age, competing in her
first meet at 6. After moving from Zimbabwe to South Africa at age
8, she joined the Mobill Squad, coached by the husband and wife
team of Mo and Bill Lamont. In a strange twist, it was here that
she first met Owen and his sister Jane Molenaar. What a small swimming
world it is after all! Alex continued swimming throughout her age-group
years, and was ranked in the top 3 nationally from ages 8-12. The
impact that her coaches made on her, and the positive lessons learned
from being a part of the swimming community have shaped her desire
and love for coaching. At 13 she made the South African National
Travel team, and traveled with them abroad to Hong Kong and Taiwan
to represent her country. She continued through high school, and
was elected State Team Captain her senior year to represent her
state team at Nationals. At 15 she won her first national title
in the 100m freestyle, and following year was National Champion
in the 200m freestyle. She traveled to the US at 17, attending the
University of Houston on a swimming scholarship. She competed in
Division 1 NCAA's her freshman and senior year, and currently holds
the school record in the 200yd freestyle. While still swimming in
college, she began coaching a summer league swim team, and discovered
her passion for coaching and teaching younger swimmers. After graduation,
she worked for a year as a college assistant coach to Ginger Hurley.
In 1998, she began her High School coaching career at North Shore
Senior High School in Houston, Texas, and in that same year was
named as the Conference Coach of the Year. Moving to San Diego in
2001, she returned to both age-group coaching and to swimming herself.
While motivated and invigorated by her coaching experiences at Pacific
Swim, she began Masters swimming, competing in her first Masters
Nationals in 2003. At this meet she was awarded All-American status
for her first place finish in the 200yd freestyle. In addition to
this achievement, she was on the 200yd Women's Freestyle Relay that
broke (and still retains) a National Record. Alexandra has been
involved in all levels of swimming and coaching. She firmly believes
that a solid background in technique and a consistent commitment
to working hard will always lead to success. Her coaching philosophy
is based on the idea that success in the pool is achieved by those
same elements that lead to success outside the pool; namely Consistency,
Balance, Accountability, Attitude and Community.
